The temple is believed to be over 150 years old and houses self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shiva and Parvati idols.
According to legends, after the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the serpent Vasuki settled here in the form of a Shiva Linga. A farmer named “Vasu” is believed to have rediscovered it, leading to the name “Basukinath.”
Devotees affectionately refer to Lord Shiva here as “Faujdari Baba”, as it is believed he delivers swift justice and resolves difficult problems.
During the Shravani Mela, millions of Kanwar pilgrims walk over 100 km from Sultanganj to offer holy Ganga water to Baba Baidyanath in Deoghar, and then to Baba Basukinath.
The temple complex also includes the sacred Shiv Ganga pond and smaller shrines dedicated to various deities. Major festivals celebrated include Mahashivratri, Shravani Mela, and Ram-Janaki Vivah Utsav.
The temple attracts lakhs of devotees throughout the year from across India and abroad.
